Recent Accomplishments and 2011 Goals
- NCATA members engaged legislators in 2009 to support a ban on texting while driving, which became NC law in December 2009.
- NCATA members across the state worked together to counter legislation in 2010 that would have required cyclists to ride single file without regard to roadway condition, context or lane configuration.
- Other positive outcomes in recent years include approval by the NCDOT Board of Transportation of a statewide Complete Streets policy, which is now being solidified through the development of design guidelines for NC roadway projects.
2011 Policy Goals
- Promote enhanced Safe Passing Distance legislation
- Support adoption of NC DOT Complete Streets Design Guidelines
- Strengthen anti-Harassment legislation for non-motorized roadway users
- Support stricter penalties for distracted driving incidents and educate roadway users on the dangers of impaired and distracted driving
- Support stronger education on bike/ped safety and relevant laws in statewide driver's license exam and driver's ed training
- Engage the NC Legislature and our members on the issue of Comparative Fault v. Contributory Negligence, in order to encourage the NC Senate to vote on a complimentary bill to the NC House Bill 813 (approved in 2009)
- Work with the NC Bicycle Committee and NCDOT on design standards for bicycle-friendly rumble strips on NC roadways
- Promote LAB "Bike-friendly" business/community/university designations
